Rivian has broadened the horizon for electric vehicle enthusiasts by introducing two new battery options for its R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, enhancing accessibility and flexibility for potential buyers. These additions, named the Standard and Standard+ battery packs, are designed to cater to a wider range of customer needs and preferences, emphasizing Rivian’s commitment to making electric vehicle ownership more attainable without compromising on performance.
The Standard battery pack is projected to offer a range of 270 miles, while the Standard+ battery pack aims to provide up to 315 miles of range. These new options are strategically aligned with specific drive systems, being available for the R1T and R1S models equipped with the Dual-Motor AWD drive systems. However, it’s important to note that these battery packs are not compatible with R1 vehicles configured with Rivian’s Performance Dual-Motor AWD or the Quad-Motor AWD configurations, indicating a thoughtful segmentation strategy to meet diverse user demands.
The introduction of these battery packs not only broadens Rivian’s product offerings but also integrates advanced battery technology, utilizing NCA (Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum) cell chemistry. Further developments are on the horizon, with Rivian planning to incorporate lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells in the Standard battery pack later in the year, promising enhancements in efficiency and durability.

In addition to the technological advancements, Rivian has also considered the financial aspects of electric vehicle ownership. The Standard+ battery pack is priced at an additional $3,100, providing a cost-effective option for those seeking extended range without the need for the larger capacity options. For those desiring even greater range, Rivian offers the Large pack, capable of 352 miles for an additional $9,100, and the Max battery pack, which delivers an impressive EPA-estimated 410 miles of range for an added cost of $19,100.
Rivian’s initiative is further sweetened by the eligibility of these new options for the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) tax incentives, potentially offering a $3,750 tax incentive for purchases and a $7,500 EV lease credit at the time of purchase, enhancing affordability and accessibility for a broader audience.
This expansion of battery and range options by Rivian marks a significant step towards accommodating the diverse needs of electric vehicle buyers, reinforcing Rivian’s position as a forward-thinking and customer-centric company in the electric vehicle market.
