The Radar RD6, a groundbreaking electric pickup truck introduced by Geely’s Radar Auto, stands out in the automotive industry for its affordability and impressive specifications. With its launch, the RD6 marks a notable shift towards more accessible electric vehicles, particularly in the electric truck segment where prices have traditionally been high. Priced starting at approximately $25,000 for the base model with a 63 kWh battery offering a range of 249 miles, the RD6 is significantly more affordable than many of its competitors.
The RD6 is available with three battery options: 63 kWh, 86 kWh, and 100 kWh, providing a maximum range of up to 392 miles on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). Its electric motor, positioned on the rear axle, delivers 268 horsepower and 283.2 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in as little as 6.9 seconds, depending on the variant. Despite its powerful performance, all versions maintain a top speed of 115 mph.
Geely has ensured the RD6 is not just about performance but also about practicality and convenience. The truck bed comes equipped with six power outlets, including a 6-kW external discharge station, and interfaces for 220V and 12V, supporting vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities. This makes the RD6 not just a vehicle but also a power source for tools and electronic devices, enhancing its appeal for outdoor and work-related activities.
The RD6’s design and engineering are based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), promising a smooth and responsive driving experience with its McPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear setup. Inside, the RD6 offers a modern and comfortable environment with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system, and 72-color interior ambient lighting.
Currently, the RD6 is aimed at the Chinese market with its initial launch in China in 2022. However, there’s anticipation for its potential expansion to international markets, which could further disrupt the electric vehicle space by offering a cost-effective alternative to existing electric trucks.
Overall, the Radar RD6 represents a significant development in making electric trucks more accessible to a wider range of consumers. With its competitive pricing, comprehensive range of features, and the backing of Geely’s extensive automotive experience, the RD6 is poised to make a considerable impact on the electric vehicle market.
